Approaching August trading, market participants in the US seem to have no clear idea about the price direction.

Following its slump during July trading, the prime grade scrap price has seen the lowest spread between shredded after months.

A scrap supplier tells Kallanish: “Prices have decreased in an unexpected way in July. Although we were certain that prices would fall, $145-150/tonne in prime grades and $30-35/t in obsolete grades were surprising. Although the bushelling scrap price has become competitive now, its demand is yet to strengthen due to the weak sheet sales.”

“Given the weak sentiment in the global market, I think further price declines in August trading in both shredded and bushelling are inevitable,” says a trader who expects the margin between shredded and bushelling to further squeeze.

Most market participants do not expect to see support from Turkey, meanwhile.

“Most probably, Turkey’s demand will not be as strong as before the Eid holiday. Last week, during Turkey’s holiday, the sentiment has worsened in the global market with the slump in China and Turkey’s steel prices are now no more competitive in the global market due to high-priced scrap purchases. They should initially wish to gauge the situation in steel sales,” says a US trader.

In Turkey, market participants believe that US-origin HMS 1&2 80:20 price, which reached $408-410/t cfr before the Eid-holiday, is likely to fall below $400/t cfr levels in the short term as Baltic-origin HMS 1&2 80:20 prices have already decreased to $400-402/t cfr on the bookings disclosed in the market on Monday. Scrap demand has remained weak on the business day after a long holiday, while most market players expect it to remain unchanged throughout the week.

在西海岸，由于中国市场下跌，日本报价竞争激烈，钢材销售低迷，买家对废钢的需求相当疲软，市场形势也不乐观。原产于美国的集装箱装运HMS 1&2 80:20废钢报价在360-365美元/吨cfr台湾左右，台湾买家在周一似乎无法接受。

On the West Coast, the market situation is no brighter as buyers’ demand for scrap is quite weak amid the slump in the Chinese market, competitive Japanese offers and low steel sales. US-origin containerised HMS 1&2 80:20 offers at around $360-365/t cfr Taiwan do not seem acceptable for Taiwanese buyers on Monday.
